Shih Tzu Puppy Information

The shih tzu is a toy breed thought to originate from China. Bred solely as a companion dog, a shih tzu is happiest among a human family. Their playful and kind nature also makes them suitable for a household with other pets and children.

Size

An adult shih tzu ranges from 8 to 11 inches tall at the shoulder and weighs between 9 and 16 pounds. To estimate the full-grown size of your puppy, look at her parents. Most breeders are happy to share information with you.

Training

A shih tzu can be challenging to train. Consistency, puppy training classes and, above all, patience are keys to successful training.

Coat

Groom your shih tzu on a regular basis. Daily brushing is necessary as well as weekly bathing. Keeping your puppy's hair short will reduce some of this dog's demanding grooming requirements.

Purchasing

Purchase your puppy from a reputable breeder only. The American Kennel Club (AKC) will provide a referral for someone in your area. Ask your breeder plenty of questions.

Cautions

Allergies often plague the shih tzu. Trying different, lower-allergen foods may help; ask your breeder for food recommendations. Use hypoallergenic shampoos to reduce the risk of an allergic reaction.
