Make Huge Hair Bows

Satin, grosgrain or organza wide ribbon makes perfect hair bows.

Hair bows are a fun fashion accessory that seem to always be in style. Hair bows run the gamut from tiny ribbons that attach to a baby's head with Velcro to barrettes, ponytail holders or alligator clips with bows attached. Huge hair bows became a popular trend in the 1980s. As with so many other trends, the huge hair bow is back in style, and with just a few materials, anyone can make one.

Instructions

1. Cut two 18-inch pieces of wide-width satin, grosgrain or organza ribbon.

2. Fold one piece of the ribbon in half.

3. Use a basting stitch to connect the ribbon ends.

4. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 with the second piece of ribbon.

5. Lay one ribbon over the top of the other, creating an X.

Lay one of the ribbons over the top of the other at a slight angle to create an X. Adjust the ribbon loops so that the sewn edges are in the middle of the crossover.

6. Sew a few basting stitches in the middle of the X to hold both ribbon pieces together.

7. Cut a 16-inch length of wide-width ribbon and tie a bow in it. Adjust the loops and tails of the bow until you are satisfied with the lengths of both.

8. Apply tacky glue to the ends of the ribbon or cut off a small portion with pinking shears on both tails of the bow to prevent the ribbon from fraying. Allow the glue to dry completely

9. Lay the new bow on top of the X made with the other two bow parts, centered in the middle horizontally.

10. Use a few more basting stitches to the secure all three parts of the bow together in the middle. Sew the stitches from behind so they cannot be seen from the front of the bow.

11. Use hot glue to attach the bow to a plain barrette or plain plastic headband. Once the glue is dry, use your fingers to fluff out the loops on the bow.
