Make Infant Hair Clips

Finding barrettes and hair clips that work in a baby's fine hair can be a challenge. Making your own infant hair clips can help you keep your baby girl's hair tidy and neat and allow you to make barrettes to match her outfits. Bigger girls can wear these simple ribbon hair clips as well and some adults may even like them, especially while growing out bangs or a short hair cut. Pretty infant hair clips make a great baby gift, first birthday present or anytime gift for your own little girl.

Instructions

1. Cut approximately a 7-inch length of ribbon. Finish the ends to prevent fraying with a product like Fray Check, available with sewing notions at fabric or discount stores or by simply melting the ends with a cigarette lighter. Melting the ends does not work with natural fiber ribbons and care should be used.

2. Open the hair clip and apply glue or adhesive to the inside bottom of your infant hair clip. Lay the ribbon neatly on the bottom of the barrette. Crease sharply at the end and fold over the the bottom of the hair clip. Apply more adhesive and wrap the ribbon over the underside of the infant barrette.

3. Fold the ribbon carefully over the clip section of the alligator clip. Apply glue to secure as needed to the end of the hair clip.

4. Wrap ribbon over the front of your infant hair clip. Carefully apply glue to the solid areas of the alligator clip. Crease neatly at the end of the top and tuck the ends to the underside. Be careful that the ribbon lines up on the top and bottom of the hair clip before gluing into place.

5. Embellish your infant barrettes. You can add small ribbon bows, glue on buttons or add charms. Do keep the potential for choking in mind and make sure that all embellishments are well-secured in place.
