Make Butterfly Hair Bows
Hair bows are an easy way to dress up a little girl's outfit. You have several different kinds of hair bows to choose from when you decide you want to put one in your little girl's hair. There are simple traditional bows, large layered bows and bows that are like ribbon sculptures made to look like many different objects. One such ribbon sculpture-type bow is the butterfly bow, which uses different pieces of grosgrain ribbon to form a butterfly. Instead of buying butterfly bows in a store, you can make your own.
Instructions
1. Fold your ribbon over 2 1/2 inches from one end. Make another fold 2 1/2 inches from the first fold. Make a final fold 3 1/5 inches from the second fold you made. Crease these folds to create guides for making your loops.
2. Make a big loop with the longer section of ribbon that was between the end of the ribbon and the last crease that you made. Use a small dot of your fabric tacky glue and your blank hair clip to hold that loop in place. Make another large loop, which will be directly across from the first with the next section of your ribbon between the creases. Again, use a drop of your fabric tacky glue and your blank hair clip to hold that loop in place. To make these loops you want to bring the ribbon up around and down.
3. Made a smaller loop with the next section of ribbon between the creases; this loop should be directly below the first bigger loop that you made. Tack the loop down with your fabric tacky glue and your blank clip. Make your final loop, another small one, directly across from the last loop that you made and below the second larger loop. Use another small dot of your fabric tacky glue and your blank hair clip to hold it in place. Let the fabric tacky glue set for at least 10 minutes before you remove the clip.
4. Take your 3 inches of 1/4-inch grosgrain ribbon and trim the center from all but the last inch of the ribbon. The center of the ribbon will be the part that has lines running from side to side. You will notice that there are lines that run up and down the ribbon; you want to leave these intact. Attach this portion of the butterfly, which makes up the antennae, to the body so that the antennae are at the same end as the large loops of the wings. Use the full part of the antennae piece and some fabric tacky glue to attach this piece.
5. Wrap your 3/8-inch grosgrain ribbon tightly around a 1/4-inch wooden dowel, securing it at both ends of the wooden dowel with binder clips. Bake the ribbon for 20 minutes at 350 degrees, on a cookie sheet. Let the ribbon cool for 10 minutes before gently unwinding it from the wooden dowel. Cut a 2-inch length of the now spiral-curled ribbon and hot glue it to the opposite side of the butterfly body as the antennae piece is glued to.
6. Cover the top of your blank hair clip with the 3/8-inch grosgrain ribbon using hot glue. Attach your butterfly to the top of the clip with hot glue.
