Make Stacked Hair Bows

Make your own hair bows with ribbon.

You can use hair bows to complement a special outfit, but store-bought bows are limited to the styles and colors that manufacturers believe will sell. If you would rather have a hair bow that fits your own personal style, you can make your own. Stacked hair bows allow you to use three or more colors in the same bow to match your outfits or favorite color combinations.

Instructions

1. Cut two 11-inch strips of one color of the 2 1/2-inch-thick ribbon.

2. Cut two 9-inch strips of another color of the 2 1/2-inch ribbon.

3. Cut one 7-inch strip of the third color of 2 1/2-inch ribbon.

4. Cut one 3-inch strip of the 3/8-inch ribbon.

5. Set your glue gun to medium heat and allow it to warm up.

6. Fold each strip of ribbon into a loop so the ends overlap about 1/2 inch. Place a dot of hot glue between the overlapping ends. You will have five loops of ribbon.

7. Lay your two largest loops (the ones made with 11-inch-long ribbon strips) parallel to each other so the sides touch.

8. Wrap a 2-inch-long section of florist's wire around the center of both ribbon loops to bunch them together in the center. The result is a basic bow shape. Twist the wire and allow it to stick out from the back of the bow.

9. Lay the two loops made with 9-inch-long ribbon strips parallel to each other the same way and wrap another 2-inch section of florist's wire around them to create a bow. Twist the wire and allow it to stick out from the back of the bow.

10. Wrap a 1-inch section of florist's wire around the last, smallest loop to create a bow. Twist the wire and allow it to stick out from the back of the bow.

11. Pull the wire ends from the back of the medium-sized bow and wrap them around the center of the largest bow, to stack the medium bow on the large bow. The wire will hold them together.

12. Pull the wire ends from the back of the smallest bow and wrap them around the medium and large bows. Twist them at the back of the large bow to secure the entire stack of bows. Twist all of the wire ends that are on the back of the large bow so they are all as tight as possible. Cut the excess wire with scissors.

13. Apply a bead of hot glue to the smooth edge of the French clip and press it onto the back of the stack of bows so that the smallest bow is on top.

14. Pull the long, flexible spring bar out of the French clip. To do this, pull upward from the center of the spring bar to make it pull out from the sides. Set it aside.

15. Wrap your 3-inch section of ribbon around the bow stack and the clip. Secure it with a dot of glue directly on the clip, between overlapping ribbon.

16. Replace the spring clip by inserting the two prongs on one end into one side of the clip. Push toward the inserted prongs to make room for inserting the prongs on the other side. You will need to apply moderate pressure, but the spring bar is meant to hold up and bend. Your bow is ready to wear.
