Bikinis For Various Physical Structure

Only certain body types could pull off a skimpy, polka dot bikini.

Wearing the right style bikini for your body type could completely change how you look. Some silhouettes are designed to emphasize and flatter certain features, while other shapes fool the eye by drawing attention away from the parts you would rather not flaunt. A few basic tips could help you choose the right style.

Balance Wide Hips

A plunging halter and a bikini with high cut legs work well for pear-shape body types.

If you're a bit self conscious about having wide hips and thighs, you probably have a pear-shaped figure. The most common mistake is wearing a bigger bottom, in an effort to cover up your curves. Stay away from boy shorts, because the more fabric you're wearing, the bigger your hips and thighs will look. A bikini cut high on the legs draws attention away from the hips by making your legs appear longer. To balance your body shape, wear a bottom that's smaller than your top -- one designed to draw the eye up, away from your bottom. A patterned top, or a halter with a plunging V-neckline, are styles that would work well.

Boost a Small Bust

If you have an athletic body type and small chest, a skimpy bikini, paired with a patterned top, is right for you.

If your curves are barely noticeable, especially in the chest area, you may have an athletic body type or a straight, boyish figure. Thinking that a plain, basic bikini top won't draw attention to a small bust is common mistake -- they may make your chest look smaller.

Gals who are less endowed look best in tops that are adorned with extra embellishments, such as ruffles, bows, pleating, beading and patterns, because they add the illusion of extra bulk. Skimpy bottoms will work well, such as a string bikini. It will help to balance a small chest.

Minimize a Big Bust or Broad Shoulders

Look for boy shorts or swim skirts to balance a large chest or broad shoulders.

If you're larger than a B-cup, you should look for tops with under wires or other supportive built-in bra features. Stay away from tops with high necklines, or you'll look like you have one huge uni-boob.

If the top of your body looks much bigger than your bottom, which is often the case when you have a large chest, de-emphasize the size of your upper half by wearing a top with wide straps, such as a thick-strapped halter. Stay away from spaghetti straps, which make your chest appear bigger and your shoulders broader. A bigger bottom, such as a boy short or swim skirt will help balance your figure and also help your chest and shoulders appear smaller.

Tummy Control

If your lower abs are not your best feature, or you tend to gain weight in the belly area first, like an apple body type, then the modest tankini style swimsuit may be tempting. However, this style typically leaves a slice of skin exposed -- emphasizing the exact spot you're trying to hide. Instead, look for an extra-long tankini top with ruching, which will fit less clingy.

Another option is to wear a bikini top paired with a full-coverage bottom that has a fold-over style waistline. The extra fabric over the elastic will prevent unflattering pinching at the waistline.

Flatter Your Curves

Bikinis cut low enough to accentuate a small waist are perfect for hourglass figures.

If you have an hourglass figure -- ample hips and chest, but a small waist -- you're lucky; but, finding the right swimsuit for your body type isn't effortless. Your waistline can get lost or disappear next to all your curves, especially if you have a petite frame. Wearing a moderate-style bikini bottom that's cut too high on the waist can make you look stocky.

The key is to accentuate your waistline and elongate your torso. Go with a skimpier style bikini, looking for bottoms that sit low on the hips. This will elongate your torso and draw attention from your hips to your small waist. Choose a top that provides just enough coverage, and you'll look perfectly balanced -- just like your figure.
