Make Hair Bows With Wide Satin Laces and ribbons

Make wide-ribbon satin hair bows at home for customized accessories.

Making hair bows at home lets you customize your hair accessories to match your outfits or your style. Caregivers can create homemade hair accessories for children or let the kids participate for an afternoon activity. The procedure is relatively simple and using wide satin ribbons offers an opportunity to decorate the hair bows with gemstones, sparkles and paint.

Instructions

Ribbon and Gemstones

1. Cut an 8-inch piece of the satin ribbon. Tie the ribbon into a bow and pull on the bow loops tightly to make sure the bow stays secure.

2. Cut out a triangle from both ends of the ribbon to create a fish tail. Apply a small amount of glue with the hot glue gun along the cut edges and smooth it out with your fingers to help prevent fraying. If the bow is for a child, let her use a puffy paint pen to decorate the ribbon.

3. Apply an inch of glue with the hot glue gun to the center of the metal hair barrette or clip. Add an extra dab of glue to the back center of the bow. Press the bow firmly onto the barrette and hold it for at least 30 seconds.

4. Use the hot glue gun to apply glue to the center of the bow and to the back of the imitation gemstone and press the gemstone firmly onto the bow. Hold the gemstone firmly for at least 30 seconds. You can also use the glue to add small gemstones or glitter to the length of the bow.

Curly Ribbons

5. Cut a 10-inch section of satin ribbon and wrap it around a 1/4-inch wooden dowel to make a spiral around the dowel. Use paper clips or binder clips to secure both ends of the ribbon to the dowel. Cut nine more 10-inch sections of ribbon and repeat this process.

6. Place all of the wrapped ribbons on a baking sheet and bake them in the oven at 275 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 to 25 minutes. Remove the sheet from the oven and allow the ribbons to cool at room temperature for at least one hour.

7. Gather together one end from each ribbon and sew the ends together using a single stitch. You can leave the ribbons like this if you prefer a very long ribbon barrette. You can also gather together the opposite ends of the ribbons and sew them together using a single stitch. Join both sewn ends together and use a zigzag stitch on a sewing machine or a whip stitch by hand to join them. The whip stitch is done by inserting the sewing needle through both pieces of fabric approximately one-quarter of an inch from the hem and looping the thread around the outside seam and back into the fabric in a circular motion. The thread will cover the entire outside seam when your are finished.

8. Use a hot glue gun to apply glue to the length of a metal barrette or clip and press the joined end of the ribbons onto the clip. Hold the ribbon and clip together firmly for at least 30 seconds.
