Are you an archery enthusiast looking to share your knowledge with others? Does your town lack proper equipment or training? If you are considering starting your own archery store, you will need more than just insider knowledge on the best sights, bows and arrows. You will need to get licensed, trained, organized and staffed.
Instructions
1. Research the local market to determine the demand for an archery supply shop and indoor range. Visit sporting goods stores, interview club members and military members about the demand for archery training and equipment. Then formulate a business plan identifying how much square footage you will need for your showroom and how many lanes to include in your indoor range.
2. Contact your county clerk to obtain your business license and reseller's permit. This is a must-have for attending trade shows. Find out what, if any, permits are needed to operate your archery store and range. Additionally, you might be limited on the location, use, operation, safety and construction of your range.
3. Select a location that has been properly zoned for your archery showroom and indoor range. Ensure you have enough room to accommodate your lanes, but don't overdo it. While indoor ranges might have up to 16 lanes, you might only need one or two. These should be around 20 yards in length. Extra, unused space results in higher utilities fees. You always can expand your range later.
4. Purchase popular archery equipment and supplies such as bows, crossbows, bow and arrow cases, tree stands, sights, targets, 3D targets, accessories, scents and custom arrows. Contact popular bow manufacturers such as Mission, Bowtech, Diamond, Bear, Parker, Browning, Genesis, PSE, Rytera, Bear and Ross. Purchase left-hand bows. Implement automated targets that automatically return to the shooter once he has finished and allow him to retrieve his arrows quickly, without having to wait for everyone else to finish before retrieving his arrows.
5. Attend archery trade shows to learn about the latest industry news and products, as well as to network with manufacturers. See Resources for information on upcoming trade shows.
6. Learn repair the bows that are sold in your store by contacting the bow manufacturer or enrolling in a course. Contact Bowtech University or visit Chapmanarchery.com for more information.
7. Become a certified archery instructor or hire one, if you prefer to take care of the administrative side. Visit Teacharchery.org for information on register for a variety of instructor courses.
