Ribbon barrettes can be customized to match a child's outfit.
Ribbon hair barrettes were all the rage in the 1980s. They are easily made from a few store-bought materials and can be customized to match outfits, given as gifts or used as a craft idea for a group of girls. With a number of creative embellishments available, such as glitter glue, sequins, silk flowers, beads and rhinestones, ribbon barrettes can be as unique as the person who makes them.
Instructions
1. Choose a ribbon that is slightly wider than your metal barrette. Cut a length of ribbon equal to twice the length of the barrette plus 2 inches.
2. Apply seam sealant to the ends of the ribbon to prevent fraying.
3. Fold the ribbon by bringing the two ends together until they meet in the center. Use fabric glue to secure the ends to the center.
4. Cut another piece of ribbon just large enough to wrap around the center of the barrette. Wrap the ribbon around the barrette to create a bow. Secure in place on the back of the barrette with fabric glue.
5. Apply a line of fabric glue to the barrette. Center the ribbon bow on the barrette and let it dry for a minimum of 30 minutes.
6. Embellish barrettes with flowers, beads, sequins or crystals if desired, gluing them in place with fabric glue and allowing time to dry.
