Gaga Fashion Details

Gaga sometimes wears 10-inch high gravity defying heels designed by Japanese designer Noritaka Tatehana.

From meat dresses to Hannibal Lecter-inspired cage helmets, to say Lady Gaga's fashion choices are extreme is an understatement. The pop icon's ensembles have sparked outrage, debate, awe, and a throng of followers in Hollywood who have had to up their game in order to keep up with her. What goes into creating Gaga's audacious attire is as fascinating as the looks themselves.

Fashion Philosophy

Her outfits make Madonna's iconic 1980's cone bra look downright demure, but attention-seeking isn't the only driver behind Gaga's over-the-top looks. In an interview in 2009 she told Ellen Degeneres, "I didn't fit in in high school and I felt like a freak ... so I like to create this atmosphere for my fans where they feel like they have a freak in me to hang out with and they don't feel alone." Lady Gaga's outfits didn't start out as extreme as they are today. When she first hit the music scene in 2008, she was more inclined to favor long, straight blond hair, oversized bows, tunics and a look described by "Rolling Stone" magazine as "Keisha in bad Halloween makeup."

Designer Influences

With all of the attention and publicity, it's no wonder designers line up to work with Gaga. Maybe it's the Italian in her blood -- Gaga was born to Italian parents in New York City -- because one of her favorites is Versace, who is reportedly designing her wedding dress for her marriage to Taylor Kinney. Gaga also loves Atso Kudo who made the red latex rubber dress she wore to the 2009 Royal Variety Performance. The fashion world is smitten by Gaga, too. She's appeared on the cover of "Vogue" twice, March 2011 and September 2012.

Haus of Gaga

Lady Gaga began developing the persona we know today while she was writing and recording her first album "The Fame" in 2007 and 2008. Her creative team, which she dubbed Haus of Gaga, was instrumental in developing her look. Inspired by Andy Warhol's New York City studio The Factory, a place where artistic people came together to share ideas, Haus was a group of friends whom Gaga would consult with when making decisions on fashion, hair and accessories for her performances and tours. Mugler creative director (2011-2013) and Haus of Gaga fashion director Nicola Formichetti was instrumental in creating her image; he even introduced her to milliner Nasir Mazhar who created the head pieces she wore while filming the music videos for "Poker Face" and "Alejandro."

Notable Outfits

The most controversial of Gaga's outfits was the infamous meat dress, which Formichetti helped her create for the 2010 "MTV Video Music Awards," and was named the top fashion statement of 2010 by "Time" magazine. Unsurprisingly, PETA and other animal rights groups were in an uproar after she donned the creation, made of raw flank steak stitched together. Another wild outfit was the Kermit the Frog Jean-Charles de Castelbajac dress she wore on German television, complete with a matching Kermit headband. If the past is any indication, Gaga will only continue to surprise her fans and the fashion world with her outrageous sartorial choices as her career grows.
