Girls have sported stacked hair bows for generations.
Stacking individual bows to create a larger bow is a time-saving trick when fashioning elaborate boutique hair bows. The prospect of looping one long ribbon many times and somehow holding all the loops together is a daunting prospect for even the most skilled crafter. You can achieve the same effect by binding individual loops in a bow arrangement. Not only is this method easier to execute, it also affords you the opportunity to use different ribbons to create an accessory with multiple colors or patterns.
Instructions
1. Cut the 22-inch section of ribbon into two 11-inch pieces. Cut the 18-inch section of ribbon into two 9-inch pieces.
2. Lay the 11-inch, 9-inch and 7-inch pieces in front of you. You should have five pieces total.
3. Apply a dime-sized dollop of hot glue to the center of the bow. Press it to the top of the barrette.
4. Turn each piece of ribbon into a loop by overlapping the ends to create a circle. Hot glue the overlapping ends together, to secure the loops. You should now have five loops of grosgrain- two large loops, two medium loops and one small loop.
5. Cut three 12-inch pieces of floral wire. Use craft scissors to cut the wire.
6. Place one section of wire on your work surface running vertically. Lay the two largest grosgrain loops side-by-side on top of the wire. It should resemble an equal sign with a wire running up-and-down beneath it.
7. Lift up the ends of the wire. Bring them together above the ribbon loops. Twist the wire together, to secure the two loops in an X-shaped bow. Twist the wire several times. Set the bow aside. Repeat the process with another section of wire and the two medium loops. Repeat the process a final time with the small loop. You should have three bows, all secured with floral wire.
8. Trim the excess wire from the large bow. Fold the twisted section of wire over, so that it is flat against the underside of the bow.
9. Hold the large bow with the top side facing up. Hold the medium bow over it, with its excess wire pointing down. Lay the medium bow on top of the large bow. Arrange the excess wire from the medium bow so that one piece is on each side of the large bow's center point.
10. Twist the loose ends of the medium bow's wire beneath the large bow, to secure the two bows together. Trim the excess wire. Fold the twisted section of wire over, so that it is flat against the underside of the bow. Repeat the process to stack the small bow on top of the large bow. All three bows should be stacked and secured. There should be no remaining excess wire.
11. Turn the stacked bow over so that the underside is facing up. Apply a pea-sized bead of hot glue to the center of the bow. Press one end of the 3-inch piece of narrow ribbon into the glue. Wrap the ribbon around the center of the bow. Apply another bead of hot glue in the center of the bow. Press the other end of the narrow ribbon into it, to secure it. This short ribbon, wrapped around the middle of the bow, will cover the wire and give the appearance of a knot at the center of the bow.
