While it is traditional, using ribbon is not the only way to make a bow.
When most people think of bows, images of big, puffy, brightly colored fabric bows, men's bow ties, and ribbon-wrapped packages usually come to mind. However, you can make eye-catching bows out of beads to wear as jewelry or hair accessories, and for gift embellishments or home decor. You don't need to be a professional jewelry maker either; all it really takes is the ability to string beads onto a wire, one after the other.
Instructions
1. Cut a piece of wire that is three times as long the width you want your bow to be. For example, if you want a bow that is 10 inches wide, you'll need to cut a piece of wire that is approximately 30 inches long. Make a loop at one end of it, so the beads don't all slide off.
2. Slide beads onto the unlooped end of the wire until you've covered one-third of the wire with beads. Thread the unlooped end of your wire through the small loop to create one loop of your bow.
3. Push on more beads until you've covered another third of your wire. Thread your wire through the small loop once more to create the other loop of your bow.
4. Wind your wire tightly around the center point of your bow three times to secure it. Trim off the excess with your wire cutters, as directed by craft expert Kirsten Nunez on the website Studs and Pearls (studs-and-pearls.com).
5. Examine the bow you just made and assess how long you'd like the bow's ends to hang. Cut a strong piece of string or thread that is twice as long as the length you want for the finished product.
6. Knot one end of the string or thread and string beads onto the opposite end until you've covered it completely. Knot the end and trim the excess bits of thread or string.
7. Fasten the string of beads around the center of the bow by forming a loose knot. Let the ends hang down naturally.
