Not just for gifts, korker bows also make cute hair accessories.
Resembling a festoon of curled ribbon on the top of a wrapped gift, korker bows are another colorful way to adorn hairclips, barrettes and headbands. Made of fabric ribbon heat-curled in an oven, these bows are inexpensive and easy to make at home. With some affordable supplies and a couple of arranging techniques, you can make a korker bow for your daughter in her favorite or team colors.
Instructions
Tied-Stack Korker Pompom
1. Cut thirty 4-inch lengths of curled ribbon, measuring the ribbon in its relaxed state. Hot seal the ends of the ribbons with a barbecue lighter to prevent fraying.
2. Cut 10 inches of elastic and lay it out horizontally. Line up and center ten of the curled ribbons side-by-side on the elastic. Stack another ten curled ribbons on top of the first, slightly offsetting them diagonally to the right. Stack the last ten curled ribbons on top, offsetting them diagonally to the left.
3. Bring the ends of the elastic up carefully and tie a knot to bunch the stacks in the center. Before securing the knot completely, ensure that your ribbons are even. Carefully pull the opposite end of any ribbon sticking out too far.
4. Tie a final knot, adding a dab of hot glue for security. Attach the pompom to a clip, barrette or headband with hot glue.
Sewn Korker Daisy
5. Cut ten 3-inch lengths of white curled ribbon and hot seal the edges with a barbecue lighter.
6. Thread a long, sharp sewing needle with white thread and insert the needle through the center of each of the ribbons, threading them in a stack.
7. Arrange the ribbons in a circle by spinning them on the thread in different directions. Secure them place with one or two stitches and sew a large yellow button in the center. Tie off the thread and secure with a dab of hot glue.
