Make Cloth Headbands
Headbands are a handy way to eliminate a bad hair day and provide an accessory to match a variety of clothing choices. You can make cloth headbands in a multitude of colors and designs using leftover fabric from your scrap bag. Recycle old or altered clothing to create one-of-a-kind headbands for yourself or as gifts for family and friends. This quick project is a great sewing activity for a birthday party or scout club and is a nice party favor to take home.
Instructions
1. Measure and cut two strips of fabric that are 2.5 inches wide by 20 inches long. Cut a 2.5-inch length of half-inch-wide elastic.
2. Lay one fabric strip on your ironing surface with the wrong side up. Fold one short end of the strip a half-inch to the wrong side and press. Repeat on the other short end and the short ends of the remaining fabric strip.
3. Place the two fabric strips together with the right sides facing and the edges matching. Pin the long edges together. Sew each pinned edge using a quarter-inch seam allowance. This is the decorative part of the headband. Turn the headband right side out and press.
4. Topstitch along each long edge, one-quarter inch from the edge.
5. Center and insert one short end of the elastic a half-inch inside one open end of the headband. Pin to secure through all layers. Topstitch across the short end, one-quarter inch from the edge. Turn and topstitch the short end again to further reinforce the stitches. Insert the other end of the elastic a half-inch inside the other open end of the headband and pin. Top stitch in the same way as the other end.
