Make Animal Formed Hair Bows

Use white ribbon to make polar bear hair bows.

Make animal-shaped hair bows for a special little girl from a few scraps of ribbon and felt fabric. Have her help you make the hair bows by decorating the animals with felt and bead features for a handmade hair accessory. You can attach the animal shape to a plastic or metal hair clip or barrette, or glue the animals onto elastic hair bands. Make a collection of animal-shaped hair bows in different colors so that she can help choose the hair bows each day that best coordinate with her outfits.

Instructions

Lion Hair Bow

1. Cut a 4-inch-long piece of 1-inch-wide medium-brown ribbon. Wrap the ribbon in a circle, sew the ends of the ribbon together and sew the center of the ribbon circle to keep its shape. This makes the lion's mane.

2. Cut a 2-inch-long piece of ½-inch-wide yellow ribbon. Wrap the ribbon in a circle and sew the edges together. Sew the middle of the circle together.

3. Place the small yellow circle on top of the larger circle. Sew the pieces together at the center of the ribbons.

4. Sew two black beads near the top of the yellow ribbon to make the eyes. Sew a larger button beneath the eyes to make the nose. Stitch a line for the mouth with black thread.

5. Cut 2 pieces of ½-inch-wide yellow ribbon that is each 1-inch long. Gather one finished side of the ribbon and sew the gathered fabric together on each ribbon.

6. Sew the tiny gathered pieces of ribbon together at the top of the medium-brown circle to make the lion's ears.

7. Apply some glue to the center back of the lion face. Press a metal or plastic hair clip against the glue and hold it in place for 30 seconds.

Teddy Bear Hair Bow

8. Trace a teddy bear shape that is about 2 inches tall onto a piece of brown felt and cut out the shape. Spray the back of the felt teddy bear shape with a stiffening interfacing spray and let the spray dry for 10 to 15 minutes.

9. Cut out small paw and inner ear shapes from a lighter color of brown felt. Apply a little bit of craft glue to the back of the tiny paw and ear shapes and press them against the ears and the paws of the teddy bear.

10. Cut out two black felt circles and three tiny ½-inch long strips of black felt to make the eyes and the whiskers for the bear. Cut another small circle for the bear's nose and a small semi-circle for the bear's mouth. Glue the tiny pieces onto the face of the teddy bear.

11. Cut a small piece of ¼-inch-wide ribbon and tie the ribbon in a bow. Glue it onto the neck of the bear to make a bowtie.

12. Spread a little bit of glue on the top of the plastic or metal hair clip. Press the top of the hair clip to the center back of the teddy bear and hold the pieces tightly together for 30 seconds. Let the glue dry for 20 to 30 minutes before wearing.
