Make your daughter feel like a pretty princess with homemade hair clips. Since hair clips ideally should match whatever clothing you're wearing and should reflect your personal style, you may find that making princess hair clips at home is a better option than buying premade ones from a store.
Materials
Look online or in department stores for prong-style hair clips, the type used to hold rollers. These come in packages of anywhere from three to a dozen, and are good for hair-clip crafts because they don't tangle easily in hair. Metal prong clips are stronger in the long run, but they may rust over time. Choose plastic clips if your child is very young, to reduce the risk of scratches.
Make sure all materials and embellishments are washable. The clip will gather oil and dirt from hair as it is used, so you'll want to be able to keep it looking fresh. Glossy ribbons and cloth tend to show oil spots, so you may want to avoid those.
Personalize your hair clip using beads, glitter, glue or craft paint. A hot-glue gun is handy and will speed up the assembly process, but a quick-drying, permanent-bond glue works as well. Keep nail-polish remover handy to dissolve the permanent glue if you get some on your fingers.
Wrapping
Glue a small section of ribbon around the entire length of the clip to reduce the risk of scratching the scalp. The ribbon also will serve as a foundation for the embellishments you want to attach to the clip. Try to match the width of the ribbon to the width of the clip.
Design
You have many design options for making your clip into a princess hair clip. Use lots of ribbons and let them flow down from the clip. Consider using pastel colors for your materials, especially pink, white and purple. Make the clip sparkle by using ribbon that has silver or gold flecks, or glue sequins or glitter to the ribbons.
Assembly
Attach the bottom ribbons or cloth first. Let the glue dry completely before proceeding so the base of your design doesn't slide out of position. Continue to apply additional layers as desired. When you are done, glue a button over the main area where you've been gluing to hide the adhesive, or wrap a small piece of ribbon over the area and glue the ends to the underside of the top clip.
