Adding a tutu slip adds a fun new twist to your skirts.
Adding a tutu slip under an everyday skirt or to your child's costume can add a fun new flair. Since tulle is inexpensive and a slip is easy to make, it is cost effective, too. Wearing a tutu slip under a skirt, dress, or tutu that is itchy or irritating will add a second layer of comfort and fullness to a girls' ensemble, especially if it has volume for a ballerina or princess costume. The best part is that you can create your very own, one-of-a-kind style.
Instructions
1. Measure the width of your waist with the fabric measuring tape. Cut the elastic band to the measured size, adding an inch for leeway.
2. Cut the muslin cotton fabric into two identical skirt shape pieces of fabric based on your measurements, adding 3 inches to the sides of each piece. Also cut the fabric to your desired length, adding an extra 2 inches. The length is up to you, but cutting about 4 inches from the knee is a good length.
3. Sew the two pieces of fabric together by placing the two separate pieces on top of each other and sewing down each side about 1.5 inches from the edge. Turn your slip inside out, and try it on make sure it fits properly.
4. Fold the top of the fabric over the half-inch elastic waist band and sew along the edge where the elastic and fabric meet.
5. Fold the bottom end of the slip over about a half inch and use safety pins to secure in place. Then, sew a hemline around the bottom of the slip to prevent snags and unraveling.
6. Cut the tulle fabric into two strips. These strips should be 6 inches wide and as long as your slip. Using your sewing machine, sew the strips 6 inches from the bottom of the slip, and the other strip 10 inches from the bottom of the slip. The color of tulle you choose to use is your choice, but purple is the new hot color according to Marie Claire.
For added effect, hot glue small bows made from thin ribbon around the top of the tulle about 6 inches apart. Please remember to use glue gun safely and keep it out of children's reach. Glue guns should always be used pointed down to avoid getting burned.
