The key to creating "big hair" is having the correct tools and techniques. Improve the appearance of fine, flat hair by adding lift and volume. Volume gives hair dimension and texture and can be added to almost any hairstyle. Perk up updos by adding volume at the crown. Create body by adding volume to large, loose curls and waves.
Products
Use the correct products to create lift and volume in hair. Try light-weight mousse, dry shampoo and volumizing hair spray. Squeeze a golfball-sized dollop of mousse into palm. Work mousse through damp hair. Flip head over and aim the nozzle of blow dryer at roots. Continue drying until hair is almost completely dry. Flip head back over and use a round brush while drying to calm any frizz. Work a small amount of dry shampoo into roots after blow drying. This will encourage volume while absorbing any excess product or grease. While styling hair, use a hairspray designed to encourage lift and volume. Concentrate on spraying the roots.
Teasing Comb
The teeth of teasing combs are set very close together so you can effectively create volume and lift. Purchase a teasing comb at any beauty supply store or supercenter. Create volume with a teasing comb by taking a thin section of hair and combing it straight up. Place the comb halfway down the section of hair. Using a quick motion, move the comb down to the roots. Place the comb halfway down hair and repeat process a few times until hair stands up. Spray with volumizing hairspray. To create volume at the crown, repeat this process until you have created a domelike structure of hair.
Hair Inserts
Use a hair insert designed to create volume. These inserts are generally D-shaped. The flat part is set against the head and hair is placed over the bump in the insert. This creates volume without the need to tease the hair. To use a hair insert, pull up a section of hair near the crown of the head. Place the insert directly under this section. Secure the insert and then allow hair to fall over the insert. Spray with hairspray. Look for inserts that closely match the color of your hair.
