How Does a Corkscrew Work?
Corkscrew Anatomy
Corkscrews are used to free corks from the necks of wine bottles. At its most basic, a corkscrew is a handle with a curled metal bar (a "worm") extending from it. The worm is screwed into and grips the cork firmly, allowing the user to yank it from the bottle. Because the worm is curly rather than straight, it remains firmly rooted in the cork even if much pressure is applied. This keeps the cork from crumbling or breaking in the bottle.
Using a Corkscrew
Using a corkscrew is fairly simple. Remove the foil from the top of the wine bottle. Insert the corkscrew at an angle into the top of the cork. Straighten the corkscrew so it is driving straight down into the cork, then twist the corkscrew until the worm is firmly inserted. Finally, pull the handle up until the cork releases from the bottle.
Types of Corkscrews
There are several different types of corkscrews, but all are variations on the basic design. The waiter's corkscrew is the most stripped-down model and basically consists of a worm, a handle and occasionally another handle that flips down against the rim of the bottle and provides some leverage. The screwpull has a handle that twists, making it easier to drive the worm into the cork. The butterfly is similar to the screwpull except it has a set of wings that rise up above the corkscrew as the worm is worked into the cork. The user pushes down on both wings to slide the cork out of the bottle
