Make corkscrew hair bows using a homemade fabric stiffener.
Corkscrew hair bows, also known as korker ribbons, add color and a lot of fun to any child's hairdo. Although you can purchase premade corkscrew hair bows, you can also learn make your own hair bows using fabric stiffener and your oven. Use a commercial fabric stiffener or learn make your own homemade stiffener. Once you're finished, you'll have perfect corkscrew hair bows that will never lose their shape.
Instructions
1. Preheat your oven to 200 degrees Fahrenheit.
2. Spray a commercial fabric stiffener or your homemade fabric stiffener (see Tips) over your ribbons to wet them. Make sure you spray each ribbon evenly, without oversaturating them.
3. Wrap your ribbon down the entire length of a 1/16-inch wooden dowel.
4. Secure both ends of the ribbon to the top and bottom of the dowel with clothespins. Cut off any excess ribbon that falls past the bottom of the dowel.
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until you have enough ribbons for your hair bow; you'll need about 20 ribbon-wrapped dowels.
6. Place your ribbon-wrapped dowels onto a cookie sheet and allow the ribbons to dry for approximately 30 minutes. Bake the ribbons in your oven for 20 minutes.
7. Allow the ribbons to cool for 10 to 15 minutes. Remove the clothespins from each dowel, and slide the dowel out from the middle of the ribbons.
8. Place your corkscrew ribbons on top of an elastic cord. Tie the elastic cord tightly around the middle of the ribbons. Snip off the excess ends of the elastic cord. Slide a bobby pin or a plain hair barrette through the elastic cord to attach the bow to the hair.
