Make a shaggy dog using yarn to give to a young child. This simple and enjoyable project will create an adorable little puppy that any child would love. Few materials are necessary for this project, and the time it will take you is minimal. In less than a day, you can easily finish one of these fun little creatures and have your gift ready to give.
Instructions
1. Cut a 3-inch square from the cardboard to use to make the pompoms.
2. Wrap yarn from one skein around the cardboard square 30 times. Wrap the yarn loosely enough to allow you to remove the yarn from the cardboard after wrapping. Slip the yarn from the cardboard.
3. Cut a 4-inch length of the same yarn and use this to tie the loops of yarn tightly in the center. Clip each yarn loop with the scissors (on both sides of the center) to create a fluffy pompom.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to make 36 pompoms out of the main color and 16 pompoms out of the complementary color for your shaggy dog.
5. Measure the craft wire and cut three 35-inch lengths. Fold each wire length in half.
6. Fill the first wire by sliding a main color pompom onto the wires. Slide the pompom onto both wires, positioning the wires around the center tie of the pompom. Push the pompom until it reaches the bend on the other end of the wire. Push the pompom so the bend of the wire bends around the center tie of the pompom. Slide four more main color pompoms onto the wire. Slide four complementary color pompoms onto the wire next and then slide six main color pompoms to finish the first wire. Twist the wire after the last pompom and clip any excess wire so ½-inch of wire extends. Bend the wires around with the pliers to bury them inside the pompom.
7. Fill the second wire in the same fashion, except slide two complementary color pompoms, 12 main color pompoms and two complementary color pompoms. Fill the third wire to look the same as the second wire.
8. Hold the first wire (the head, neck and body of the shaggy dog) horizontally. Bend the wire slightly at the neck area to make the head higher than the dog's body. Place the second wire perpendicularly over the first wire so it crosses just below the neck. Bend the second wire over the first wire. Place the third wire perpendicularly over the first wire so it crosses near the tail of the dog. Bend the third wire over the first wire.
9. Thread the yarn needle with a 10-inch length of matching yarn. Sew the second and third wires to the first wire using this yarn to secure the legs to the dog.
10. Cut two large white felt ovals and two smaller black felt ovals. Glue the white ovals onto the sides of the dog's face, and glue the black ovals onto the white ovals. Cut a long, thin red felt oval for the tongue. Glue the tongue to the front of the dog's face in the mouth location.
11. Tie the ribbon around the dog's neck in a pretty bow.
