Scraps of leftover fabric can become accessories.
When you sew or alter any article of clothing or craft project, you will probably have small pieces of fabric left over. Throwing these out may seem like a waste, but they can built up over time with none seeming quite large enough to make use of. With a little forethought in saving your fabric scraps, you will be able to collect enough for a variety of different projects.
Hair Accessories
You can make custom hairbands and clips by hot-gluing extra fabric onto a plastic hair band, or forming it into a bow or flower and gluing to a clip. To make a flower, layer four long, thin strips of fabric and fold the ends into the center. Sew the ends down and add a button or other detail to the flower's center. You can also attach strips of elastic and create hair bands and ties. You can tie strips of fabric into bows around a regular hair tie and secure with hot glue. Sew two long, thin strips of fabric around a piece of elastic to make a headband.
Phone and iPod Covers
If you have scraps of at least 4 inches by 6 inches, you can make an iPod cover or a sleeve to fit a cell phone. Measure your phone to determine the dimensions. Leave an extra half-inch around your measured fabric for sewing. You can even use other scraps to create appliqu s to attach to your finished cover for personal flair.
Patchwork Crafts
If you have several scraps of similar fabric of at least six inches in length and width, you could make them into a custom patchwork quilt or even a skirt, or bag. If you have long, narrow scraps, sew them together and add an elastic waist to make a skirt. Sew square scraps together into a quilt or even into a personalized tote bag, using longer, narrow scraps, or even trimmings if you had to cut some scraps into squares, to make the straps.
Appliqu s and Clothing Add-Ons
If you customize your own clothing, you could use scraps from one project to add some flare to another. Make appliqu s in designs you like to add to shirts or skirts, or use scraps of brightly-colored fabric to add a strip of color to a black shirt. You can use leftover fabric to add new hems and lengthen other pieces of clothing, or cut apart a seam and sew in a strip of fabric to make a tight-fitting article of clothing looser and more comfortable. You could even use leftover fabric to transform your own old jeans into comfortable maternity jeans.
