Dreadlock extensions allow you to create a style in 24 hours that takes years to grow naturally.
Dread hair extensions allow you the versatility of a permanent hairstyle without the commitment. You can replicate the look of 10-year-old dreadlocks in 24 hours. You can also use dread hair extensions to repair or add fullness to your natural dreadlocks or even use them as an alternate way to start permanent dreadlocks to avoid the awkward "budding phase." Having them installed professionally can cost you $250 or more. Alternatively, you can install them yourself for a fraction of the cost. You can use yarn, wool, synthetic braid hair, human hair or a combination to form your deadlock extensions.
Instructions
Braid the Yarn Into The Hair
1. Part your hair into 1-by-1-inch sections and use hair clips to keep the sections separate.
2. Cut the yarn to four times the length you want your dreadlocks. Fold the yarn in half and cut along the fold making two strands. Fold the yarn in half again so that you have two stands on one side of the fold and two strands on the opposite side.
3. Remove the hair clip from your section of hair and place the yarn over it so that it forms three sections: two strands of yarn on the left side of the section, your hair in the center and two strands of yarn on the right side. Braid the yarn into your hair until you have 3 to 4 inches of braid with your hair at the center.
4. Take one of the two strands from the left side and one of the two strands from the right side and add them both to your hair in the center. Continue braiding down the entire length of the yarn.
5. Tie a slip knot at the end of the braid using one of the strands, cut the loose strands from the knot and burn the end of the knot to seal the braid.
Wrap the Hair Around the Braids
6. Loop the Afro kinky hair over the yarn braid tight to the scalp. Hold half of the hair against the braid and begin wrapping with the other. Continue wrapping until you have 1 inch of wrapping hair left.
7. Loop another piece of Afro kinky hair over the braid over the 1 inch of wrapping hair. Add the 1 inch of hair to the braid along with half of the new piece and begin wrapping with the remaining piece. Continue wrapping and adding hair in this manner until you reach the end of the braid.
8. Pinch the end of the braid, fold it over and take small pieces of the Afro kinky hair from the ends and wrap the hair up the braid until all hair has been wrap into the dread.
Seal the Dreads
9. Cover your shoulders with a thick bath towel. Pour the boiling water into an extra large cup.
10. Dip the entire dread into the cup of water for 5 seconds. Hold a towel beneath the dread and slowly remove the dread from the cup so that the dread rests on the towel.
11. Squeeze the water out of the braid and hold it in the towel until it is no longer steaming. Repeat steps 1 through 3 until your whole head is finished.
