Boutique hair bows are popular accessories for girls and young women. These bright, colorful and versatile hair decorations can be worn to complement outfits or express one's personality. If you want to create your own, custom boutique hair bows, all you need to do is follow some simple instructions, and you will have a fun, money-saving craft to do with your pre-teen girls. Use your imagination with colors and designs, textures and patterns to create these unique accessories.
Instructions
1. Fold the end of your 20-inch piece of ribbon over by 3.5 inches, using a ruler or measuring tape to determine where to fold.
2. Use your measuring tape again to measure four inches in from the other end of the ribbon. Fold the 4-inch section over.
3. Continue wrapping the ribbon around until it is looped around itself, but when laid flat still measures 4 inches.
4. Use your pushpin to mark the middle of the folded ribbon, and insert the pin at the 2-inch, center point.
5. Separate the loops until you can see three layers. Starting on one side of the bow pull the top layer and the inside layer in the same direction while you pull the middle layer in the opposite direction. Do the same on the other side until you see an "X" shape. You can make the "X" wider or thinner based on your preference.
6. Keeping the pushpin in place as a guide, use your needle and thread to fasten the bow in the "X" position. Remove the pushpin. Wrap the thread now around the bow tightly, so that it gathers in the center. Take a moment to adjust the ribbons, checking that they are even.
7. Use your small piece of ribbon to cover the center of the bow. You can knot the ribbon and then glue it in place with your glue gun, or fold the ribbon around the bow and glue it in place.
8. Glue a small piece of ribbon to your barrette to line it, and then glue your handmade bow to the covered barrette to complete your boutique bow.
