Crocheted headband
Making your own hair accessories saves you money. You can give homemade hair clips as presents or bridesmaid gifts. Once you gather your supplies, you will be able to make several accessories in an hour. This also allows you to add a personal touch to your hair and coordinate your accessories with your outfit.
Barrettes
Make hair accessories simply by using store-bought barrettes. This saves you time, but still gives you custom hair accessories. Decorate metal hair clips with ribbon. The goal is to make a flat, plain clip resemble a hair bow. Look for weightier ribbon that will hold up over time. According to craft expert Martha Stewart, the ribbon piece should be twice as long as the clip, with an additional two inches. Look for a ribbon that is wider than the barrette. Use seam sealant on the ends of the ribbon so the ribbon doesn't fray. Fabric glue holds the ribbon in place. Secure the ends of the ribbon to the center of the barrette creating an oval shape. Cut a smaller ribbon and glue it around the oval in the middle for a bow effect with dimension. Another variation on this project uses a smaller barrette. After the first oval shape is dry, glue another oval on top of it to form an X shape. You can embellish the center of the barrette with a small pearl or bead.
Barrettes also can be a way to showcase a favorite vacation or your love of the ocean. You can affix sea shells to a barrette with a hot glue gun. Begin by placing your biggest shells, and then fill in the gaps with smaller shells.
Customize barrettes to fit certain holidays or seasons. Start out with clear glass pebbles and a metal barrette. You can use decorative stickers, such as snowflakes or dried flowers, to make the hair accessory. Glue the front of the sticker to the back of the craft stone with decoupage glue. If you really want the embellishment to pop, add color. Paint the back of the pebble using paint markers. For larger barrettes, you may need several coordinating pebbles. Bead adhesive holds the pebble to the barrette. You can wrap masking tape around the craft to keep it in place while the glue dries.
Hair Pins
Hair pins keep your hair neat while adding a simple or elegant accessory. Create elegant beaded hair pins for children or adults. Start out with jeweler's pliers, seed beads and nickel wire. To create a flower, put seed beads in the middle of the wire and twist to form a petal. Keep threading and twisting the wire until you have several petals. Tie a knot around the last bead to hold it in place. Cut away any extra wire. You can wire the handmade embellishment to a headband or bobby pin. Create several matching hair pins to stick in the back of a bun to make a bold statement.
You can easily create button hair pins using items that you already have in the house. If the hair accessory is for children, look for colorful bobby pins in red, blue or green. Add interest to the button by cutting out a small felt leaf and sewing it to the button to resemble a flower. For a modern look, sew a small button on top of a larger one. Use heavy thread to secure the button to the bobby pin. If you are creating hair accessories as a gift, make a custom card for the pins. Print the recipient's name on patterned paper and cut it into a small rectangle using decorative scissors. Slide the bobby pins over the edge of the card.
