Most hair bows are bright, solid blocks of looped color. They immediately catch attention and give an outfit a finished look. If you favor a lighter and ethereal style, you can create a standard boutique hair bow out of sheer material like tulle. Even though tulle is lightweight and semi-sheer, it is rigid enough to maintain a bow shape. Choose tulle ribbon in the same width you use when making grosgrain bows.
Instructions
1. Thread the needle with a 24-inch piece of thread. Double it over to make a 12-inch piece of doubled thread. Tie a knot at the end. Set the threaded needle aside.
2. Trim the ends of the long piece of ribbon with scissors. Cut the ends at a diagonal angle or in a bifurcated shape. Seal the ends of the ribbon with no-fray protectant.
3. Lay the long piece of ribbon horizontally on a work surface in front of you. Start working from the left end of the ribbon.
4. Fold the end over onto the rest of the ribbon. Make the fold roughly 5 inches in from the left end of the ribbon. The ribbon should appear roughly 25 inches long with 5 inches doubled-over on the left side.
5. Fold the looped end of the ribbon over onto the rest of the ribbon. Make the fold roughly 6 inches in from the end of the ribbon. The ribbon should appear roughly 19 inches long with 6 inches tripled-over on the left side. The looped end that was the left edge should now be on the interior side of the layered section.
6. Repeat the folding process with 6-inch folds until the ribbon ends.
7. Weave a straight pin into the middle of the bow to hold it in place. Gently separate the loops on each end of the folded ribbon. Spread them to form the bow's shape.
8. Weave the threaded needle into the center of the bow. Make sure you catch each layer of ribbon. The needle should run top-to-bottom and be parallel to the work surface. Remove the straight pin. Pull the thread tight to create gathering and dimpling in the center of the bow.
9. Wrap the thread around the center of the bow to secure its arrangement. Tie the thread off on the underside of the bow.
10. Tie a knot in the middle of the small piece of ribbon by crossing one end of the ribbon over the other, then pulling it through the loop it made.
11. Apply a bead of hot glue to the short ribbon on the underside of the knot. Stick the glued knot onto the top of the bow in the center. Wrap the ends of the short ribbon around. Secure them under the bow with hot glue.
12. Apply a dime-sized bead of hot glue to the underside of the bow, in the center. Press the bow into the top of the barrette.
