According to an August 2009 article in "Marie Claire," while not all Japanese women have straight hair -- even some Japanese women need help taming those frizzies -- the fashion norm is to wear the hair smooth and straight. Pigtails are one of the many hairstyles that Japanese women pull off with ease and grace due to the consistency of their hair.
Instructions
1. Use a flat iron on dry hair to get your hair super straight. If you already have straight hair, you can run through your hair with the flat iron on low or medium to just smooth out your layers.
2. Apply a dab of anti-frizz serum to your hair. The serum helps to control wild or frizzy hair from interfering with your sleek and smooth look you are attempting for Japanese pigtails.
3. Comb your part. If you have bangs, leave your bangs facing forward, which is how Japanese girls with bangs keep them. Create the part going straight down the middle all the way to the back. Section the hair with your hairbands to keep the strands in place. Or, create a side part if you do not have bangs.
4. Start with one of the two sections of hair that is tied back. Undo the hairband and comb the section of hair to the height you want the pigtail to sit on the side of your head. Japanese pigtail styles include heights that range from low against the base of the head, to a mid-level pigtail to pigtails that are high near the head's crown. Secure the section with the hairband and repeat for the other side. Make the two pigtails as even as possible.
