Little girl with an oversized hairbow.
Oversized hairbows are adorable accessories for a little girl's wardrobe. Make your own oversized hairbows to coordinate with a special outfit or a special occasion. Select wide grosgrain ribbons to make an oversized bow that looks like a fluffy sphere. Thinner ribbon will also make a fluffy hairbow, but the design appears smaller than ones made with wider ribbon. It takes a lot of ribbon to make an oversized hairbow, but the end result is worth it when you see the sparkle in a child's eyes.
Instructions
Making the Bow
1. Unroll 3 to 4 feet of ribbon from the spool, but do not cut it. Make a 5-inch-long loop at the beginning of the ribbon strip. Hold the tip end of the ribbon at the base of the loop with the sides flush. Make another 5-inch loop in the opposite direction. Keep the sides flush.
2. Loop the ribbon in layers over the first loops, 15 more times. Keep a tight grip on the center of the ribbon between the loops as you wrap. Cut the ribbon from the spool, leaving at least a 2-inch tail of ribbon beyond the center point.
3. Fold the ribbon loops downward so that the fold in the center is facing up. Make sure to keep the edges of the ribbon loops and the center point flush.
4. Make a 1-inch diagonal cut towards the center fold on each side of the ribbon stack. Each side of the ribbon stack will have an inverted V cutout. The ribbons are still joined together in the center by a narrow strip.
5. Allow the ribbon loops to fall back in place on either side of the center. The cutout in the center between the two loops has an hourglass shape. Hold the center of the ribbon securely as you maneuver it.
6. Wrap the twist tie tightly around the center of the V in the center of the ribbon.
7. Hold the ribbon stack with one of the loops facing up. Begin separating the inside layers of ribbon from the loop first by pulling them one by one to the side and then down towards you. Successively pull each layer of ribbon out and towards you until one side of the oversized bow is complete.
8. Repeat step 7 with the remaining loop of ribbon. Fluff the oversized bow to the desired shape after separating all of the ribbon loops.
Making the Oversized Hairbow
9. Run a bead of viscous jeweler's glue over the top of a metal barrette form.
10. Center the oversized bow on top of the barrette. Press the underside of the bow onto the glue strip.
11. Allow the glue to dry completely before wearing the hairbow.
