Creating a bow in Corel PaintShop Photo Pro is simple with these helpful hints.
Corel's PaintShop Photo Pro is an alternative to other image editing software programs such as Adobe Photoshop. The process of creating images is simple and intuitive. Even a novice can make a bow in less than 30 minutes, using tricks and techniques found online.
Instructions
Creating the Outline
1. Start a new Corel PaintShop Photo Pro document with a transparent canvas 800 pixels wide by 600 pixels tall.
2. Select the "Ellipse" tool from the preset shapes in the toolbox. Choose any color from the materials palette for the "foreground and stroke" color and set the "background" color to transparent. Verify that the mode is set to "Draw Ellipse," the line style is solid and the width is set to 6 from the preset shape toolbar options.
3. Draw an oval in the center of the stage. Select the "Pen Tool" from the toolbox, right-click on one of the node handles and choose "Convert to Path" from the contextual menu. This is the base for the left "ribbon" of the bow.
4. Click on the left node handle to show the single side expansion controls. Select the upper arrow and drag the handle up to flare the left side of the bow.
5. Click on the upper middle node and drag it slightly down and toward the flared left side of the shape. Use the handles on either side of the node to change the angle of the curve so that it roughly matches the angle seen in a real bow from the center to the outer edge. These node handles can be elongated or shortened to further customize the angles as needed by dragging them away from the node or towards the node respectively.
6. Repeat this process with the lower middle node, but begin by dragging the node up instead of down to create the proper angle.
7. Select the left node. Right-click on the node and choose "Node Type," "Cusp." Use the resulting control handles to adjust the upper and lower sides of the flare individually to achieve a more realistic bow shape.
8. Select the right node and drag it toward the left flare until it forms a short, wide, rounded curve instead of long narrow curve it originally formed. This is going to be the center of the bow and will be covered, so it does not need to be pretty.
9. Click on "Layers," select "Duplicate" and choose "Mirror" from the "Image" drop down menu. This creates the right "ribbon" without having to repeat the previous steps.
10. Rename the layers "left ribbon" and "right ribbon" to make it easier to modify the layers later.
11. Add a new vector layer from the options in the "Layers" drop-down menu.
12. Select the "Ellipse" tool and draw a circle that covers the intersecting points of the two "ribbons" drawn previously. This is the center piece of the bow.
13. Add a new vector layer from the options in the "Layers" drop-down menu.
14. Select the "Rectangle" tool from the toolbox and draw a rectangle approximately 3/4 of the size of the widest part of the "ribbon" flare in width and roughly the same height as the "ribbon" is long. This is the base of the left "streamer."
15. Select the bottom left node and drag the corner up until the corners first begin to become rounded.
16. Select the "Pen" tool from the toolbox, right-click on any of the nodes and choose "Convert to Path."
17.Select the nodes individually and drag each one until the rough shape of a bow "streamer" is formed. The top corner nodes will be dragged to the center of the bow and the rest will form an arrow like configuration. Refer to the image of a bow to get an idea of recreate the "streamer" structure.
18. Select each of the bottom most corner nodes and right-click to open the contextual menu. Choose "Node Type" and select "Smooth" for each one. Name the layer "left streamer."
19. Select "Layers," "Duplicate" and choose "Mirror" from the "Image" drop-down menu. Rename the new layer "right streamer."
Color and Layer Effects
20. Hide all of the layers except for the "left ribbon" layer by selecting the "Toggle Visibility" icon in the layers panel.
21. Select the "left ribbon" layer and use the "Magic Wand" tool from the toolbox to click on the canvas in a blank area with the "Feather" set to 0, the "Tolerance" at 15 and the "Anti-Alias" on.
22. Choose "Selection" and select "Invert" from the drop-down menu.
23. Choose "Selection" again and select "Modify," "Smooth."
24. Set the "Smoothing Amount" and "Corner Scale" at 10 and check the "Anti-Alias and "Preserve Corners" boxes and select "OK."
25. Add a new "Raster Layer" from the "Layers" menu and name it "left ribbon fill."
26
Select the "Paint Bucket" tool and click somewhere inside of the "ribbon" on the stage to fill it with color. The color chosen is not important at this point.
27
Repeat steps one through seven in this section for each of the other base layers created in section one.
28
Hide the base layers so that only the fill layers of the bow are visible.
29
Click on the "left ribbon fill" layer to select it and choose "Effects," "3D Effects" and select "Cutout."
30
Set the "Vertical" to -3 and the "Horizontal" to 5. Choose an "Opacity" of 90 and a "Blur" of 23. Choose a "Fill color" with a "Shadow" color that is a brighter shade of the fill color.
31
Repeat steps 10 and 11 for each of the other fill layers. Change the "Vertical" and "Horizontal" settings of the 3D effect to achieve the desired lighting effects.
32
Right-click on the "left streamer fill" layer and select "Send to bottom." Repeat this process for the "right streamer fill" layer.
33
Use the move tool to further adjust the individual layers as necessary.
34
Save the finished bow.
