Get creative by making your daughter's hair bows.
Homemade hair bows allow you to customize bows to your daughter's wardrobe and liking. Of course, many women still enjoy wearing a variety of hair bows, too. A large selection of ribbon is available at most craft stores and online in several colors, sizes and patterns. Creating your own bows allows you to make them as simple or complex as you would like without having to spend a lot of money on boutique bows.
Easy Bows
Make an easy hair bow using craft foam. Children can help with making these types of bows. Cut a bow shape out of craft foam and give it to your daughter to decorate. She can use craft supplies such as markers, marabou, buttons, rhinestones and beads to decorate the craft foam. After she finishes, use a low-temperature glue gun to glue the craft foam to an alligator clip or French barrette. Alternatively, use different colors of craft foam or cover the craft foam with patterned fabric.
Korker Bows
Create curly korker bows using 1/4-inch wooden dowels, grosgrain ribbon and clothespins. For best results, use 3/8-inch grosgrain ribbon; however, you can try other types and sizes. Use clothespins to secure the ribbon on the wood dowel and twist the ribbon all the way down the dowel. The more wood dowels of ribbon you make, the fuller each bow will be. Spray the ribbon with starch and water. Bake on 250 degrees for about 20 minutes. After the ribbon cools, remove it from the wood dowels and cut it into desired lengths. Dental floss and thread work perfectly to secure the ribbon pieces together. Alternatively, use a needle and thread to sew each ribbon together. Hot glue an alligator clip or French barrette on the bottom of each korker bow. A couple of examples of themed korker bows include a Halloween-themed bow or birthday bow. For a Halloween bow, use orange and black ribbon. Hot glue a clay bat or pumpkin in the center of the bow. Or create a birthday bow using a variety of bright-colored ribbon in colors such as pink, blue, red and yellow. Glue a clay balloon bouquet in the center of the bow. Clay pieces are available at most craft stores.
Boutique Bows
Use grosgrain ribbon that's 3/8 inch to 1.5 inches wide to create a boutique bow. Loop the grosgrain ribbon around itself four times and spread the loops around to create the bow. Secure the middle of the bow with thread or smaller ribbon. Glue an alligator clip or French barrette to the back of each clip. For babies, sew the smaller bows to soft headbands instead of clips. Another idea is to use Christmas-themed ribbon and glue a snowman clay center in the middle of the bow or use Halloween-themed ribbon with a bat clay center.
Other Bows
Children can have fun making a balloon bow using a package of balloons and a French barrette. Temporarily remove the metal clasp on the barrette. Have your child tie several deflated balloons around the metal clip to create a balloon bow. Place the metal clip back in the barrette and enjoy. Or create a loopy flower bow by cutting five pieces of ribbon in lengths of about 2 feet. Sew the five ends together to create the center of the flower. Use the ribbon pieces to make loops around the center of the bow to make the flower petals. Keep creating loops out of the ribbon to create petals until you achieve the look you would like. For more loops, make the ribbon pieces longer. Glue a hair barrette on the back of the loopy flower bow.
