Marabou feathers were originally the soft, downy feathers from the underside of the marabou stork, an animal in Africa. However, most feathers used in crafts today are actually gathered from turkeys and chickens, although they are still called marabou, according to the Identification Guides for Wildlife Law Enforcement. Marabou bows are bows with marabou feathers glued to them. The bows can be made of the same color ribbon and feathers, like pink and pink, or with differently colored ribbons and feathers, such as a black bow contrasted with white feathers.
Instructions
1. Cut a portion of grosgrain ribbon 8 inches long and fold it in half.
2. Sew the ends of the ribbon together to make a loop.
3. Turn the ribbon right side out so that the stitching is on the inside.
4. Cut a 1-inch-long portion of grosgrain ribbon and fold it in half.
5. Sew the ends of the ribbon together.
6. Turn the ribbon right side out so that the stitching is on the inside.
7. Pull the larger loop of grosgrain through the smaller loop and center the smaller loop on the larger piece to create a grosgrain bow.
8. Cut six tufts of marabou feathers that are each 4 inches long.
9. Turn the bow over so that its back is facing you and apply a nickel-sized dollop of hot glue to the back of the grosgrain bow's center.
10. Stick the ends of the feathers into the hot glue in a fan pattern, arranging them so that they create a circle behind the bow. Allow the glue to dry.
11. Cut a piece of felt into a circle with a 1-inch diameter. Glue the circle of felt onto the back of the marabou feathers with the hot glue gun.
12. Hot-glue a barrette onto the felt backing. Allow the piece to dry thoroughly before wearing it.
