Knitting
Knit a headband to bring to the next baby shower. Knitting for a baby can be sentimental and purposeful. Homemade gifts often become cherished family heirlooms. Knitting a headband for a baby is an appropriate weekend project for a beginner. Basic stockinette stitch and ribbing can be used to create a headband for babies zero to six months of age. Use easy-to-wash yarn, so mom will not need to hand wash baby's new gift.
Instructions
Girly Bow Headband
1. Cast on 64 stitches with your size five knitting needles and yarn.
2. Knit two, purl two across the first row, turn work. Second row purl two, knit two repeat pattern across row, turn work.
3. For rows three, five and seven knit two and purl one across. For rows four and six purl two and knit two all the way across.
4. After you finish knitting row seven, bind off leaving a 6- inch tail for sewing. Sew the headband together using the tapestry needle and mattress stitch.
5. Cast on seven stitches to start the bow. Knit row one, three, five, seven, nine and 11. Purl rows two, four, six, eight, 10 and 12. Bind off after row 12, leaving a tail of yarn for sewing. Sew the ends of the bow together. Pinch and wrap bow with some extra yarn. Sew bow to the headband with your tapestry needle.
Striped Headband
6. Cast on 64 stitches with size five knitting needles with color number one. For first row knit two, purl two across the row, turn work. Second row purl two, knit two till end of row. Cut yarn, leaving a 4-inch tail. Join your second color of yarn to the tail with a knot.
7. Knit two and purl two across row three with your second color. Turn work. Purl two, knit two across the next row. Knit two, purl to to end of row five. Cut yarn two leaving a 4-inch tail. Attach color one the tail of color two.
8. Start row six by purling two and knitting two to end of row. For row seven, knit two, purl two to end of row. After row seven, bind off. Weave in ends and sew together using mattress stitch.
