Dress up a wrapped gift with a velvet bow.
Velvet bows are appreciated for more than just Christmas tree ornaments; they are also a trendy fashion accessory as well as a dynamic gift wrap embellishment. As a hair accessory, a velvet bow is a real attention-grabber at any age. Making these bows is an ideal project for beginners and they make good gifts. Create a few, then use your new fashion diva skills to give any blouse, dress or gift package a touch of style.
Instructions
1. Determine the size and width needed for your bow. Fold the velvet in half and cut it so you have two matching pieces. Using two pieces of velvet will make the bow sturdy by giving it body.
2. Place the pieces so the wrong sides are matched up together. Sew the edges of both pieces of velvet together using a sewing machine or by hand.
3. Pinch the velvet in the center to form a bow. Cut a smaller strip of velvet in a matching or contrasting color for the center piece. Place the small strip on the front center of the bow, while you are pinching the bow. Bring the small strip around to the back of the bow. Sew the small center piece to the bow.
4. Apply rhinestones if desired, on the center piece or around the edges of the bow to embellish it. This can be done with hot glue. Fluff out the loops of the bow.
5. Sew your velvet bow to a hat, shirt, dress or purse. Alternatively, hot glue your bow to an alligator clip or headband. Or, use double-sided tape to attach the bow to a wrapped gift box.
