Create A Cake Look Wonderful Without Needing Fondant

You don't need fondant to make a cake look great.


The reason that so many professionally made cakes look picture perfect is because bakers use fondant to coat the outside of their cakes, giving them a silky smooth exterior to decorate. But since the average home cook doesn't have a fondant roller at their disposal, they must resort to alternative methods. If you want a professional-looking cake without having to shell out money for a baker or your own professional bakery equipment, you have several options. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Instructions


Candy Coated Cakes


1. Coat the entire cake in frosting or buttercream.


2. Press your favorite candies into the frosting while it is still wet. By covering the entire surface of the cake with candies, you will give the cake a pretty exterior without having to expend any effort in smoothing out the frosting on the cake. Gumdrops or nonpareils both work well.


3. Experiment with creating patterns on the surface of the cake by using different types or colors of candy. You can create shapes, abstract landscapes, geometric patterns, or spell out words.


Comb the Cake


4. Frost the entire exterior of the cake.


5. Drag a cake comb slowly and evenly across the outside edge of the frosted cake. This will create a ridged pattern along the sides of the cake.


6. Place the cake on a lazy Susan, and spin while pressing the cake comb on the radius of the circular top of the cake. As you spin the cake, you will create a series of concentric circles on the top of the cake.
