Hearts galore can be used in Valentine's crafts for kids.
Holiday crafts provide wonderful entertainment for classrooms or large groups of kids. However, it can hard to control the chaos when you've got too many supplies and too many little ones who need your attention. Cost of materials can also drag you down. For Valentine's day, a few simple crafts are enough to help your kids spread the love.
Love Notes Mailbox
Who doesn't love receiving mail, especially when it's a Valentine's Day card? Help your kids make their own mailboxes to hold their special Valentine's notes. Collect or have your kids bring in their own empty boxes; tissue, cereal or shoe boxes work best. Create a slit on the box for dropping in the notes. Tissue boxes will already have one. Kids can then decorate their boxes with hearts made from construction paper or foam, glitter drawings and Valentine's Day stickers, and more. After the mailboxes are done, kids can go around and leave each other notes and cards.
Candy Cane Hearts
Don't throw away those candy canes after Christmas. A candy cane is the perfect half of a heart. Put two together so that their hooked ends and bottom ends touch each other, and join them with a dab of glue. After you've made the basic heart shape, the possibilities are limitless. Attach a ribbon to use as an ornament, necklace or gift tag. Glue the heart to paper to create an edible Valentine's Day card. You can make many of these to decorate the room or string together into a garland.
Lots of Love Picture Frame
Have your kids bring in a photo of themselves. Prepare many cut-out hearts in varying sizes, though none should be more than an inch wide. It is better to use tougher material for these hearts, such as foam, wood or cardboard. Packs of wooden hearts can be purchased online or at most craft stores. Have students color the hearts with markers or paint and glue the hearts directly to the front of the photo. Vary the heart sizes and colors, and overlap them to create a border around the photo. Mount the photo on a piece of cardboard to protect it from sagging or bending. Apply a magnet to the back of the cardboard so the photo can be stuck onto the fridge. This makes a nice Valentine's Day present for parents and guardians.
Toilet Roll Cupid
With this project, your kids will be able to take home little Cupids to bring them some love. Bring in or collect some cardboard tubes from used up toilet rolls. Students can draw a face onto the cardboard and also add yarn or a cotton ball for hair. Loop a pipe cleaner into a figure eight for wings. Cut another pipe cleaner in half. Use one half and bend it into the shape of a D for the bow. Glue the bow to the length of the cardboard tube beneath the face. Then take the other half of the pipe cleaner and decide on the length of the arrow. Glue the arrow across the bow, and then add a construction paper or foam heart to the end for a love-filled arrowhead.
