Bows, when used correctly, can totally switch up your look and give your hair a cute, posh style. They are frequently used in a wide variety of styles from French chic to punk rock and emo. There are three different kinds of bows, available at any store that carries hair products. To determine which kind of bow you should use, think about what each style represents and what look you are specifically going for.
Clip-On Bows
Clip-on bows are usually the largest kind of bow and are composed of a pre-made loop attached to a separate clip. They are often made of cloth or some kind of ribbon and are usually worn to make an up-do look fancier. Use clip-on bows to secure large sections of hair rather than use them if your hair is down, as they are quite heavy and usually won't stay on firmly unless they have a big chunk of hair to cling to.
Bow Barrettes
Bow barrettes are smaller than clip-ons and can be used on hair that's worn down. They are usually made completely of plastic molded and painted in the shape of a bow. Use them how you would use regular barrettes--to hold bangs aside, to give some pizzazz to a plain down-do or even to decorate the base of your ponytail. Don't try to use them to pin up anything heavy-duty, as the plastic snap can only hold a small amount of hair.
Ribbon Bows
If you are looking for a more classic or old-fashioned look, using a long ribbon to tie a bow around your entire head and wearing it like a headband is very pretty. The only part that shows is the bow itself and it can be positioned to the side for a look that complements both fancy and edgy tastes. Another way to use a ribbon is to tie a knot around your ponytail or braid before securing it into a bow as you would with shoelaces. The biggest advantage of using a ribbon is that it can be used for both formal and casual looks.
