Make Pointed Boutique Bows

Make pointed boutique bows with 1 1/2-inch ribbon.

Make pointed boutique hair bows by combining a boutique bow and a pinwheel bow. Although this bow has two parts, it's simple to make. Combine the bows together with a piece of 3/8-inch ribbon wrapped around the center to cover your stitch work and give the bow a finished look. Attach your pointed boutique bow to an alligator clip or headband to create an accessory for your hair. Combine ribbon colors and patterns to create bows for holidays, special occasions or specific outfits.

Instructions

1. Cut four pieces of 1 1/2-inch ribbon, each 6 1/2 inches long with a pair of scissors. Fold each ribbon in half lengthwise. Cut both ends of each folded ribbon at a 45-degree angle. Unfold each ribbon to reveal the dovetailed ends.

2. Lay two of the ribbon pieces, face up, on a flat surface. Position the ribbons so that they cross in the middle to form an "X" shape. Place the other two ribbons, face up, on top of the first two, positioning them in a smaller "X" shape that fits inside the first.

3. Thread a sewing needle with thread that matches the color of the ribbons. Tie the two loose ends of thread together in a knot. Pick up the crossing ribbons, pinching them at the center to secure their positions.

4. Insert the needle through the back side of the ribbon layers at the center point. Pull the needle and thread through the ribbons until the knot catches on the back. Make a few straight stitches in the centers of the ribbons to secure them in place. End with the needle and thread through the back side of the ribbon. Tie a knot in the thread and clip the tails.

5. Cut a 30-inch length of 1 1/2-inch ribbon with scissors. Fold each end of the ribbon in half and cut them at a 45-degree angle to create dovetails. Unfold the ribbon ends.

6. Fold 5 inches of one end of the ribbon over itself. Ensure that the wrong sides of the ribbon are together in the fold. Fold the long tail of ribbon back over the 5-inch fold. The wrong side of the tail should be on top of the right side of the 5-inch folded portion. Continue to wrap the ribbon tail around the folded portion three more times. The ribbon should now be rolled up into a 5-inch length.

7. Insert a straight pin through the center point of the rolled ribbon. Hold the ribbon with the pointed end of the pin facing upward. Spread the ribbon loops on each side to form the bow.

8. Thread the sewing needle with a new piece of thread. Tie the ends together in a knot. Insert the needle through the back side of the bow at the center part. Pull the needle and thread through the bow until the knot catches the ribbon.

9. Sew straight stitches across the center of the bow. Pull on the thread to gather the ribbon at the center of the bow. Wrap the thread around the center of the bow three to four times. Tie a knot in the thread at the back of the bow and cut the thread's tails.

10. Place the bow face up on top of the ribbon spikes. Cut a 2-inch length of 3/8-inch ribbon that matches the color of the first ribbon. Wrap the smaller ribbon around the centers of the bow and ribbon spikes. Hot glue the ends of the smaller ribbon together with a hot glue gun.
