Curled Ribbon Tutorial

Strands of ribbon curled into tendrils is a popular style of hair accessory for babies and little princesses. Curled ribbon hair bows are also called korker bows and can be expensive to purchase. Fortunately, you can make your own curled ribbon to attach to hair clips, barrettes and headbands for a fraction of the retail cost. Make curled ribbons with grosgrain ribbon up to 3/8-inch wide. You can find grosgrain ribbon in a wide variety of colors and patterns at craft stores, fabric stores and from online retailers.

Instructions

1. Cut 3/8-inch wide grosgrain ribbons into 30-inch long strands. It takes about 20 curled ribbons to make a full hair accessory; cut as many 30-inch long strands as you need.

2. Spray one of the ribbon strands with fabric stiffener. Clip one of the ends of the strand to one end of a 1/2-inch diameter dowel that is 12 inches long. Wooden clothes pins work to clip the ribbons to the dowel. Use a thinner dowel to make tighter curled ribbons.

3. Spiral wrap the ribbon strand around the length of the dowel, making sure not to overlap the edges. Clip the end of the ribbon spiral to the end of the dowel with another clothes pin.

4. Cover a baking sheet with tin foil. Lay the dowel covered with the ribbon on the baking sheet.

5. Repeat Steps 2, 3 and 4 to spiral wrap the remaining strands of ribbon.

6. Preheat your oven to 275 degrees. Bake the ribbons for 15 minutes. Remove the baking sheet and unfurl one of the ribbons from the dowel. If the curl holds, the ribbons are finished baking. If the curl is too loose, re-wrap the test ribbon and continue baking for 10 more minutes.

7. Remove the baking sheet from the oven. Allow the ribbons to cool completely. Cooling can take up to one hour.

8. Remove the ribbons from each of the dowels. Spray fray check onto each end of your curled ribbons.
