Suggestions For A Minnie Mouse Costume

Create a classic Minnie look.

Created in the 1920s by Walt Disney, Minnie Mouse has been a pop culture icon for decades. She was first drawn as a flapper girl, to appeal strongly to the younger generation. But she soon acquired her signature outfit: a red polka-dot dress, white gloves, yellow shoes, and that big red bow. In recreating Minnie's look, this combination makes for an unmistakable Minnie Mouse.

The Dress

The easiest way to obtain a spot-on Minnie dress would be to buy a costume from a party store. Or you can search online for the perfect dress. But these costumes can be expensive, and of questionable quality. Try searching thrift stores, which are surprisingly likely to have this retro look in stock, or vintage stores, which yield even better results. As long as the dress has puffy sleeves and a circle skirt, it will be recognizable as part of a Minnie ensemble. The dress don't even have to be red and white, or even polka-dotted. Minnie has worn many colors, including blue, pink, and yellow, and she alternates between red and light blue in the Disney World parade.

The Gloves

The party store might actually be your best source in this case. Gloves are cheap, and even the puffy white ones for cartoon characters will usually be found for under $10. To add a little more Disney authenticity, you draw vertical lines on the back of the gloves: Mickey and Minnie's gloves always had three.

The Shoes

Minnie's signature shoes were yellow pumps. But any colorful shoes would have the desired effect, or you could try wearing black pumps with white socks. You probably already have something that will work. You can even spray-paint an old pair yellow.

The Bow

Mouse ears can help round out this costume. They'd be easy to find and inexpensive at a costume store--or you can make a pair in about five minutes. Take a black headband, or wrap any headband with black material. Cut out circles from thick black paper, and staple or tape them to the headband for instant ears. Nestle a big bow between them (perhaps matching the dress or shoes).

Final touches

Finish the look off with some red or pink lipstick, and draw on some whiskers with eyeliner.
