The cork tightly seals the wine bottle.
Corks expand to fill the neck of the wine bottle after insertion. This keeps the wine free of foreign particles such as dust or dirt, and also helps it age properly. Unsealed wines can turn sour or evaporate. Wine corks are made from the bark of the Cork Oak tree. This bark crumbles easily, which is why it is preferable to avoid breaking the cork when removing it from the bottle---cork pieces can easily fall into the wine. Add this to my Recipe Box.
Instructions
1. Wrap the neck of the wine bottle in the dry towel. This will help you avoid getting cut if you accidentally break the bottle.
2. Using the screwdriver, twist the screw into the cork. Leave about one quarter of the length of the screw exposed.
3. Cut string into one six inch piece with the scissors, using the ruler to measure. Wrap the thick string around the screw securely, and hold the two ends of the string in one hand. Hold the wine bottle in the other hand.
4. Pull and wiggle the string until the cork is halfway out of the bottle. Pull gently so that you don't break the cork.
5. Hold the top of the cork and with firm tugs, pull it the rest of the way out of the bottle. Use firm but not hard pressure so that the cork doesn't disintegrate.
