Wedding Pew Designing Ideas

Use the wedding bouqet and bridal gown as inspiration for pew decorations.

Make walking down the aisle an even more beautiful experience by decorating the church pews. Pew decorations, or pew markers as they are often called in the wedding industry, frame the bridal aisle, give arriving guests a hint of the beautiful ceremony to come, and add to the wedding's overall decor. Check with the church before committing to pew markers, as hanging methods often leave scratches or lift up the wood's finish. As a result, many churches have specific rules about hanging and attaching decorations to their pews, and some do not allow it at all.

Floral Arrangements

While floral arrangements are an obvious and expected choice, this is simply because nothing makes a wedding more beautiful than lots and lots of fresh flowers. There are so many options, from simple to lavish, casual to formal. Consider a spray of lilies mixed with greenery, a simple "kissing ball" of rosebuds, or seasonal selections such as chrysanthemums with autumn leaves, or pine garland. Get inspiration from the bridal bouquet and bridesmaids' bouquets, and use some of the same flowers and colors for a coordinated look.

Ribbons and Bows

While fresh flowers are beautiful, their cost can add up quickly. Ribbons and bows are an economical option, as ribbon can be purchased in bulk, and the bride and her friends or relatives may be able to create the bows themselves. When it comes to the bows' fabric, use the bridal gown or floral arrangements for inspiration. Tulle and chiffon hold their shape well and have an ethereal quality that is appropriate for weddings. Satin offers shine and formality, while grosgrain is relaxed and casual. Embellish your bows with faux pearls or jewels, silk flowers, or smaller bows in a contrasting color.

Topiary

If your church is particularly picky when it comes to adorning pews, consider potted topiary, which can be placed on the floor next to each pew. Make sure the pots will not tip over easily and are weighted to stay in place. Another consideration for topiary is their height. Make sure they do not block guests' views of the ceremony. Tie a tulle bow around each topiary's trunk for an added touch.

Candelabras

Another option that does not have the potential to scratch or mar pews is a floor candelabra. Like topiary, candelabras can be placed on the floor next to each pew. Also like topiary, they need to have sturdy bases and be placed carefully so they don't block guests' views of the ceremony. Candelabras can be adorned with flowers, ribbon or both. For safety reasons your church may not allow you to light the candles. If you do light them, place them a safe distance from guests and the bridal party.

Party Lights

For a fun and festive idea, hang a small string of battery-operated party lights across each pew. Or, bundle each string up into a free-form ball, place each ball in a silver bucket, glass urn or some other pretty container, and hang one on each pew. Add embellishments such as ribbons, greenery or flowers for a professionally decorated look.

Fabric Banners

Simple fabric banners laid over the arms of aisle-side pews may pass muster even with the most particular of churches. Additionally, banners are a chance cut costs, as a handy bride, friend or relative can sew them in the bridal party's colors, perhaps even using leftover bridesmaid dress fabric. Embellish rectangular banners with a tassel at each corner, or pointed banners with a tassel at the point. Have them monogrammed with the bride and groom's new initials in script.
