Use a Homemade Bow Maker
Sometimes it's hard to find just the right bow and when you do they can be so expensive. Making your own is a whole lot cheaper and it will ensure that you will have just what you were looking for. I have added lots of pictures to make this super simple!
If you would like to know make the bow maker pictured in this article check out the resources link at the bottom of the page.
Instructions
1. After you have decided what length you would like your bow, lay your string/wire where the center of your bow will be (see image). You can either use string or wire to tie your bow. For this example I have used string.
2. Tape the end piece of your ribbon to your bow maker as shown.
3. Proceed to wrap your ribbon around the dowels in a figure 8 pattern. Start at the bottom right and go to top left.
4. Then go around the top right dowel to the bottom left.
5. Use thread to tie ribbon. Pull thread tightly and tie in a double knot.
6. Remove bow from bow maker and clip ends of ribbon 1/4 inch from thread as shown.
7. Seal the ends of your ribbon. To do this you can use a commercial product made specifically for that purpose or simply use a lighter to slightly melt the ends of the ribbon. This is referred to as heat sealing, do not actually touch the flame to the ribbon just get it close enough to barely melt the edge.
*If this step is skipped eventually the ribbon ends will start to fray.*
8. Trim thread. Leave a little extra thread beyond the knot to keep your knot from untying. You can give your bow extra perk by giving it a little stretch.
9. Take another piece of ribbon and tie a knot in it, leaving around one inch extra ribbon on either side, as shown. You can attach this to the center of the bow by either sewing or hot gluing into place.
10. There you have it a simple bow! If you would like more information on making other types of bows check out the resources section in this article or feel free to have a look at my other articles.
