Make Headbands For Babies Having A Large Bow

Embellish an ordinary headband with a colorful loopy bow.

You can create a beautiful baby hair accessory with an enormous bow for adorable photo opportunities you will treasure for a lifetime. The simple fabric band can be made from a variety of different fabrics, allowing you to customize the hair accessory to suit your preferences. Top the headband with a simple bowtie-like bow or create an enormous multicolor, loopy bow for an eye catching fashion accessory for your own child or a special new mother.

Instructions

1. Lay out the material for the headband. You can use a stretchy lace, elastic ribbon or even a strip of fabric from an old T-shirt. When using the T-shirt strip, cut a piece at least 2.5-inches wide, fold it in half lengthwise and sew a straight stitch on the long, rough edge. Turn it right side out through one short end to make a smooth, finished fabric for the headband.

2. Measure around the baby's head with a soft tape measure and subtract one-half-inch from the circumference. Cut the material for the headband to this length. If you do not have a tape measure, wrap the ribbon, lace or T-shirt strip around her head and cut the ribbon about one-half-inch short.

3. Fold the material in half to bring the two short ends together. Fold over one-quarter-inch of fabric at one short end and slide it just over top of the other short end. Sew a straight stitch along the short edge to connect the ends of the headband.

4. Cut a total of 13 pieces of ribbon. Make each piece 7 inches long.

5. Lay the ribbons on top of one another, fold the ribbons in half and sew a stitch through the center of the fold to hold the ribbons together.

6. Slide an alligator clip over the center of the ribbons and fan out the ribbons so that none of the ribbon ends overlap one another.

7. Bring the end of one ribbon to the center of the ribbons and insert the needle through the ribbon end to make the first loop. Bring another ribbon end to the center and insert the needle through the ribbon end to make the next loop. Repeat to turn each of the ribbon ends into a loop.

8. Sew four or five stitches through the center and remove the alligator clip. Hold a large button over top of the stitches in the center of the bow and sew the button in place.

9. Hold the loopy bow against the headband in the location you would like and sew the bow to the headband.
