Belle Costume Ideas

Create your very own Belle costume, fit for a princess.

Every little girl aspires to one day be the Disney princess that she grew up adoring. Halloween and other events that promote costume are a great way to indulge the part of you that longs to live a fairytale. Belle, the beautiful and charming princess from Disney's most acclaimed and beloved film, would be the perfect princess look to re-create using items that are easily found around your home and in thrift shops.

A Belle-Inspired Dress

Use an old yellow gown to inspire your Belle costume.

Use a yellow shoulderless formal gown or prom dress to create the base of your Belle-inspired costume. Search your home for a dress, ask to borrow a dress from a friend or find a gown at a thrift store or second-hand clothing shop. If a shoulderless gown is not available, any dress in a gold or yellow hue will suffice. One who is well versed in sewing may even take on the task of lowering the dress off the shoulders to accomplish the desired look. To accentuate the gown, add a layer of chiffon to the skirt at the waist, cinching the chiffon in several places around the dress. Sew on a red or pink satin rose at each cinch and one at the center of the neckline to complete the Belle costume gown.

Hair Fit for a Princess

Style your hair, if it is long and brown, by pulling the sides back and into a loose bun, allowing the remainder and majority of your hair to flow loosely in curls around your shoulders. Tie a thick yellow ribbon around the base of the bun that coordinates with your gown or place the ribbon around your head as a headband. If your hair isn't long enough, isn't the right color or just plain doesn't look like Belle's, purchase or borrow a long brown wig and style it accordingly. Many costume stores sell "princess" wigs, which make for an easy and inexpensive natural hair alternative.

Makeup

Apply your makeup to be as subtle and radiant as possible. From the movie, we know that Belle possesses a natural beauty and glow. To obtain a similar look, make sure to apply a sheer pink blush and lipstick. A soft brown eyeliner may also be used to obtain the large-eyed Belle look. Simply trace your natural lash line with the brown eyeliner pencil, extending the line out a bit past the outer corner of each eye.

Accessories

Add a princess tiara to finish off the Belle look.

Accessorize your Belle princess costume with full-length yellow gloves, white or clear high-heeled shoes and a princess tiara. If a tiara isn't available or can't be borrowed, you can also create a simple princess tiara out of cardboard. Paint the finished tiara gold and add tiny pink or red roses to complement the roses from the gown. Wear gold earrings to complete your very own Belle costume.
