Using a straight iron (commonly known as a flat iron) to make ribbon curls may seem counterproductive, but in fact it is possible. The heat from a flat iron is capable of creating a curl with the right technique. With a few tips and tricks you'll never need to use a curling iron again.
Instructions
1. Comb through your clean dry hair to rid it of any tangles. Tangled hair is more difficult to curl without it snagging on the iron.
2. Apply Heat protectant to your hair shaft and ends to prevent damage.
3. Pin your hair up with large clips leaving one section of hair exposed, 1 1/2 inch wide. You may release more sections as you need them, but keeping hair out of the way will make this process quicker.
4. Clamp the flat iron close to the root of that section and twist away from the face, pulling gently on the iron until your reach the bottom. Once you reach the bottom and release, your section will spring up into a curl. This is a ribbon curl.
5. Repeat the ribbon curling technique on the entire head of hair.
6. Take a nickel-sized amount of styling balm or clay into your hands and rub your hands together before running your hands through your hair. Rubbing you hands together warms the product so that it spreads easily, and gives your hair a shiny finish.
