Make your own headband for your child, or to give as a gift.
Fabric hair bows are a common sight on the heads of little girls everywhere. Large flowers gracing heads and shiny bands are staples in wardrobes. Purchasing headbands can get expensive, especially if you have more than one little girl. Create your own unique and interchangeable version for a small amount of money. Headbands make fantastic gift ideas for little girls of all ages.
Instructions
1. Measure the head of the child. Because the head size varies drastically from child to child, it's best to measure. Subtract 1/2 inch from this measurement.
2. Cut elastic to the measurements of the head, minus 1 inch. This ensures that the elastic will be stretchy and not slouchy on the head. Set the elastic aside.
3. Measure fabric against elastic measurements and add 6 inches. Adding length to the fabric allows the headband to grow with the child, and to create a slouchy looking headband.
4. Fold the fabric in half with the "wrong" side facing out. Sew along the long edge of the fabric, leaving both ends open.
5. Turn the fabric "right" side out. Attach a safety pin to the elastic and feed it through the center of the fabric strip. Since the fabric is longer than the elastic, you will want to gather the fabric as you go. Pin the elastic to the ends of the fabric so you can sew them together. Top-stitch the two ends together and secure the elastic between the fabric. The headband should resemble a circle and fit snugly around the child's head.
6. Cut a piece of Velcro to attach to the fabric. Attach another small section of Velcro to the back of the large flower. Embellish the headband by attaching the Velcro. Using Velcro to attach the flower to the headband allows you to interchange flowers to coordinate with outfits. It is also possible to sew the flower to the headband for a permanent look.
