Use ribbons of contrasting colors to make the spirit bows pop.
Spirit bows are the icing on a cheerleading sundae--bouncing and waving, just like the cheerleaders themselves. Spirit bows aren't expensive, but if you have a large squad or want spirit bows with multiple color schemes, even four dollars a bow adds up quickly. Make your own spirit bows so that you can choose colors that match your teams' uniforms exactly and experiment with inventive patterned layers and cute, stylized ends.
Instructions
1. Lay 1 yard of the base-color ribbon flat. The base color should be the widest, most vibrant color in your spirit bow so that it stands out against the uniform.
2. Glue accent ribbons over the first layer using small dots of craft glue every two inches. Accent ribbons can include sparkly fabric, paw-prints or stripes, depending on your preference and the school colors.
3. Press the two layers of ribbon together with your hands for one minute or until sufficiently dry. Your ribbons must be securely glued together before tying the bow or they'll come undone.
4. Tie the two layers of ribbons into a bow beginning at the center of the grosgrain strip.
5. Lay several small drops of craft glue into the knot of the bow using a toothpick. Finish tying the bow and press the knot in place using your fingers for 30 seconds. The craft glue prevents the bow from untying during cheer movements.
6. Fan out the looped portion of the bows using your fingers and pull down the tails. The bow loops should sit higher than the bow tails for a pronounced effect.
7. Cut each bow tail in an inverted V-shape for a professional, polished look; cutting the material diagonally also prevents fraying.
8. Glue the back of the bow knot to the metal hair clip using a large dot of craft glue. Press the bow to the clip with your hand for one minute so that the glue dries completely.
