A hair accessory can make a girl feel pretty special.
Girls have worn hair bows for centuries. In the last decade, the variety of hair bows has increased with the growing availability of ribbons in different designs and prints. Also, the use of hair clips, such as the alligator and French clips, make crafting hair bows attached to clips easier. Themes are often popular, and cupcake-themed hair bows are no exception. The cupcake hair bow clip reflects the sweetness of the young girls who wear them.
Instructions
Preparing the Bow
1. Using a wire cutter, measure and cut 3 inches of wire. Cut 4½ inches of ribbon to be used for the bow knot. Lay the wire and cut ribbon.
2. Holding one end of the ribbon, fold its width in half and match up the edges evenly. Cut at an angle to make a V-shaped edge by cutting from the edges and down to the folded side.
3. Apply fray check or clear nail polish along the cut edge to prevent unraveling. Allow to dry.
Making the Bow
4. Fold the ribbon in half with the edges facing you, approximately 1½ inches from the v-cut. Fold down each side halfway. This pinches the ribbon between your thumb and index finger for a tight bow.
5. With one hand continuing to hold the fold, bring the ribbon up and over to form a loop. The loop should be approximately 2¼ inches wide to create a 4 1/5-inch wide bow.
6. Gather and fold this next part of ribbon with the hand holding the first fold. Use the same folding technique as before.
7. Continue forming the bow with two loops on each side. Try to keep your folds even and tight. With your free hand, wrap the pre-cut wire around the bow's center, and twist tightly. Don't overtwist, which can cause the wire to break.
8. Cut the end of ribbon, leaving a 1- to 1½-inch tail. Cut and seal the end as the other ribbon end was prepared.
9. Make a knot in the middle of the 4½-inch pre-cut ribbon. Apply a small dot of glue on the bow's center, and press the knot on the glue.
10. Turn the bow over, and glue down the tails of the knotted ribbon, hiding the wire and center of the bow.
Finishing the Bow Clip
11. Glue the cupcake button or shape over the knot with a small amount of glue. If too much glue is used, it may ooze from under the cupcake.
12. Make a thin line of glue on the metal clip, and press the back of the bow onto the glue. Work quickly to prevent the glue from cooling.
13. Adjust and move the loops as needed to shape the bow evenly. Avoid pulling the loops too hard, which could cause them to become uneven.
