Valentine Suggestions For Small children

A few inexpensive supplies and some creativity can help your child enjoy Valentine's Day. Young children love interactive activities, so these valentine ideas are sure to be a hit. For easy clean up, have some sponges and a trash can nearby. Be sure to help your child while he enjoys his Valentine's Day fun.

Puzzles

Craft stores or dollar stores sell poster board, markers and glue. You will also need scissors and an enlarged picture of you and your toddler. Carefully glue the picture to the poster board. Then write Happy Valentine's Day and your toddler's name under it. Using scissors cut out the picture with the writing into a heart shape. If you want an even heart, make a template by folding a piece of paper in half, drawing the heart, and then cutting along the lines while the paper is halved. After making the template, trace around it to cut out the picture. Then cut the picture into puzzle-shaped pieces. Put the pieces in an envelope and decorate with a red bow. Your toddler will love putting together his valentine.

Pass Along Card

In today's economy, cards are expensive. A family pass-around card will save money and each family member can add his personal touch to it, and toddlers will learn the pleasure of giving and receiving the card. You will need construction paper, a pen and red finger paint. Put down some newspaper on a table to make clean-up a breeze. Fold a light blue or pink piece of construction paper in half. On the outside of the card write your toddler's name. Inside write a Valentine's Day message that would be appropriate for any family member. Give the card to your toddler and explain it is her turn to give it to another family member, but first she has to make it special. Pour finger paint into a small disposable tray. Have your toddler make two fists and dip the bottom of both fists in the paint. While holding his fists and palms together, have your child make a heart-shaped imprint on the front of the card. Help your child glue a colored strip of construction paper over her name. If he can write, let him write the name of the next family member who gets the card next. When it is dry, it is passed to the next family member.

Candy Treats

Candy is always welcome on Valentine's Day, but letting your toddler decorate his own Valentine's Day cupcakes will make it more special. Arrange small paper cups of assorted red, white and pink candy. Jelly beans, small heart-shaped candies and cut-up licorice are some candies you could use. You can also provide white, pink and red sprinkles. Let your toddler enjoy decorating plain, vanilla-frosted cupcakes.

Toddlers can string red and white lifesavers or cut-up licorice sticks to make candy bracelets. Cereal also works for this activity. They can wear the jewelry and enjoy their treats.
