Christmas Eve Crafts For Children

Help your child transform plain Christmas ornaments into festive decor.

If your child is restless on Christmas Eve in anticipation for the big holiday, keep him busy by making festive crafts. Use everyday items and craft supplies to make handmade Christmas decor, goody bags, gifts and hair pieces. You can turn your Christmas Eve craft-making activities into a cherished family tradition. Kids will delight in showing off their handiwork to friends and families on Christmas Day.

Christmas Ornament

Help your child create a Christmas ornament in celebration of the holiday. Make a simple, whimsical-looking Santa Claus decoration using a red plastic ball ornament. Cover the front of the ball with flesh-colored craft paint. After the paint has dried, glue on two 10mm plastic "wiggle eyes." Tear a cotton ball in half and glue one piece across the top of the face to resemble the bottom of a hat, and adhere the other piece to the bottom to make a "beard."

Festive Hair Clip

Design a festive hair clip that your child can wear on Christmas Day. Start with a silver or gold-tone metal hair barrette. Paint the barrette with red or green nail polish. After the polish is dry, go over the clip with a coat of clear glitter polish to add glamor to the design. If you prefer a metallic look, cover the barrette with clear nail polish; sprinkle gold or silver craft glitter over the wet polish. Finish the design with a top coat of clear polish. You can also string tiny decorative light bulbs or Christmas tree charms onto fishing line and tie it onto the end of the barrette.

Tissue Paper Wreath

Make a green Christmas-inspired tissue paper wreath that you can use year after year. Cut a 5-by-5-inch piece of white or green construction paper, card stock or poster board into a circular shape. Cut a smaller circle out of the center to create a wreath shape. Tear green tissue paper into 1-inch squares. Place a dot of craft glue on the wreath and use a pencil eraser to gently press the center of the tissue paper square into the glue. Twist the paper around the pencil to form a "leaf;" cover the entire paper wreath. You can also disperse pieces of red tissue paper squares throughout the design to create a festive look.

Christmas Cookie Gift Bag

Craft decorative Christmas cookie bags that kids can fill with treats and present to their friends. Use star and Christmas tree-shaped foam stamps and paint to decorate the bag. Use a small paint brush and stencils to print names and special messages such as "Merry Christmas" on the front of the bag. As a festive touch, apply glue in decorative patterns and sprinkle red, green, silver and gold glue on in. To finish the look, punch a small hole through the top of the bag and tie a ribbon through it. Fill the bag with handmade cookies, fudge or any other sweet treats.
